How Honest? #AtoZChallenge

Holt stood his ground. “How honest do you want me to be?”

Hadden crossed his arms. “If I didn’t want to know I wouldn’t have asked.” Holt knew Hadden was angry with him. They’d been arguing for the past few months almost constantly. So much so Holt didn’t even like coming home anymore.

He sighed, the fight left him leaving him feeling empty. “You’re always on my ass about everything. Hell, Hadden, I can’t put the dishes in the dishwasher right. I do you get mad at me. I don’t you get mad at me. Last night you yelled at me because I didn’t take the trash out correctly.”

“You know I’ve been super stressed at work.” Hadden took a step toward him. Jesus, Hadden was gorgeous but Holt couldn’t take this anymore, could he? “Who takes care of this house? Me. Not you. I’m tired of-”

Holt held his hands up. “I can’t do this anymore.” He walked past a shocked looking Hadden. He slipped his jacket on and snagged his keys from the counter.

“Are you serious?”

Holt couldn’t turn around and look at Hadden. If he did Holt knew he’d lose his nerve. “I’ll come back in the next few days when you’re not here and get my stuff.” With that he left, softly closing the door to their once shared apartment behind him.

He made it to his car, started it up, and pulled out of the parking lot. The stop light at the corner turned red and Holt came to a stop. His chest constricted and he fought a sob. He couldn’t break down right now, not while driving.

His phone lit up, a picture of him and Hadden on vacation two years ago, with Hadden’s name. They were so happy back then. He had no idea what happened between them to cause such tension.

Holt silenced his phone, sending Hadden to voicemail. He couldn’t talk to Hadden or he’d go back and going back wasn’t an option. He deserved better than being yelled at all the time and put down. No one deserved that.

  1. Great piece. It’s not often we get to read break ups. They always happen off page.

  2. How fun. This is my first time here, so I am not sure if Holt and Hadden are new characters, created just for the letter “H” or not? I am reminded of the Carly Simon song, no secrets. Sometimes I wish, Carly sang, that I never never knew… some of those secrets of yours…Enjoyable read!
