Jittery Jinx #AtoZChallenge
“Are you sure you don’t want to leave?” Jake asks for the billionth time as he pushes up his glasses.
Jaron smiles and laughs as he continues to set the table for two. “Would you quit asking me that? I’m not going anywhere. Get used to it.”
“You’d be the first.” Jake mumbles as his gaze travels to the plate of stakes. He contemplates taking it to the table but with his luck he’d trip and send them flying.
“I’ll pretend I didn’t hear that.”
Jake blinks. “You heard that?”
“Of course I did.” Jaron wonders into the kitchen for the food. Jake watches as Jaron moves about the kitchen grabbing plates of food along the way. If Jake tried that he’d fall and cut himself up from all the shattered glass. Again.
Pursing his lips, Jake frowns and sits on his hands. Better be safe than sorry. Even Jake’s own family make him sit in the living room and tell him not to touch anything till dinner is ready. Lately, his family keeps telling him to show up ten minutes later so when he arrives, by taxi because he doesn’t drive, everyone is already sitting down waiting.
He can’t blame them but it still hurts his feelings.
Even once he’s seated people are still leery of him. He only spilled the entire coffee pot once and it wasn’t even in anyone’s lap just an empty chair. The cold beverage spills don’t count. The worst is when he knocked the Thanksgiving turkey on the floor and they were forced to go to Luby’s.
That was bad.
“Champagne or wine?”
Jake’s purses his lips. “Champagne. I don’t like wine.”
“Bubbly it is.” Jaron grabs the bottle from the kitchen and returns to the table filling both glasses with bubbly goodness. Jake just hopes he doesn’t spill it. “Dinner is served.”
Jake eyes his table set so fancy like like it’ll bite him. The table is the one that needs to worry because it’ll be more like he’ll bite it. On second thought that would be bad. He’d probably chip a tooth or something. He moves to the table not wanting to touch anything for fear of breaking something.
Jaron takes a seat opposite of him and takes a sip of champagne. “Why won’t you go into your own kitchen?”
“Cause I break things.”
Jaron looks him over with a soft smile. “So long as you don’t break my heart.”
Jake smiles but internally he winces because hurting Jaron is exactly what he fears. “I won’t.”
